Internal Auditor 75th Anniversary Cover

The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), a global association of more than 180,000 internal audit professionals based in Altamonte Springs, Fla., is celebrating it's 75th Anniversary in 2016. The IIA's magazine, Internal Auditor, was charged with starting the celebration year off with a special issue that looks at the past, present, and future of the profession. The editors threw out the magazine's regular design template and worked with the magazine's designer to create a special issue that focuses on the many voices of the internal audit profession and their perspectives on how internal auditing has evolved over the years.

For those who don't know what internal auditing is: Internal auditors are like business physicians. They evaluate the overall health of the organization by assessing the effectiveness of its risk management, controls, and governance.

The magazine staff knew they wanted to do something special for the cover. They decided to do a fold-out cover and feature IIA members who represent the diversity of the profession. The end result was a cover portraying internal auditors of different genders, ages, and ethnicities from a variety of industries, including hospitality, health care, finance, and technology. For example, the cover models include Lisa Lee, the internal audit director for Google in California; Sushant Janakiraman, director of Internal Audit for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts in the United Arab Emirates; Jenitha John, chief audit executive of FirstRand Ltd. in South Africa; and Audley Bell, chief audit executive of World Vision International in New York. The cover also features a student who was on the verge of getting his first job in internal auditing. The cover story consisted of interviews with all the cover models to get their perspectives on the issues currently facing the profession.

The magazine's designer, Yacinski Design ( hired an excellent photographer for the cover shoot, Mark Tuchman ( All of the cover models were brought together at The IIA's 2015 International Conference in Vancouver at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The photographer and designer found a perfect location for the shoot out of the way of the busy convention traffic. Although they feared the wall the cover was shot against would be too busy, it actually turned out to be quite an interesting backdrop for the photo. The rich, warm, brown, orange, and gold tones really lent themselves to a beautiful cover.
