Q&A with Allen H. Kupetz, COO of venVelo and Co-chair of the Department of Business, Rollins College

How would you best describe your magazine (company, etc.)
venVelo is the most active early-stage investment fund in central Florida and won Tech Investor of the Year in 2014.

What makes it special?
We are smart money – we invest in start-ups, but provide much more than just funding. We coach, mentor, introduce, and help staff our portfolio companies.

What steps led to your current position:
Like any successful start-up, at venVelo we identified a need in the market for a smart-money investor to support the central Florida entrepreneurial ecosystem.

What’s been a career highlight?
Directly related to my talk at the upcoming conference titled Global Technology Trends, I published a book in 2008 called The Future of Less – What the Wireless, Paperless, and Cashless Revolutions Mean to You. I was invited to speak on this topic all over the world and you’ll hear the current version in August. But don’t buy the book! Send an email to [email protected] and mention the FMA conference and I’ll be delighted to send you a digital copy at no charge.

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in your industry?
It is always a little too early to try to predict the future. :-)

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without?
My Outlook calendar – if dinner isn’t on it, I go hungry that evening...

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can’t you live without?
People are surprised to find out I am not a gadget guy – I’ll never own an iWatch.

What’s the best professional advice you’ve ever received?
When I was a young officer working for the government, I had a message that required my boss’s signature. I walked into his office, put it on his desk, and just stood there waiting for him to sign it. He took it, put it in his inbox, looked up at me and said, “The more responsibility I get, the slower I read.”

What’s the best professional advice you could offer?
Life is a team sport – don’t try to play it alone.

What are you working on now?
I just published my first spy novella. Please check out Assignment: Seoul at http://www.amazon.com/Assignment-Seoul-Allen-Kupetz-ebook/dp/B00XLY9II2/
