SUMMARY
The Graphic Designer in our Educational Materials department reports to the director, production and new media and is responsible for design and pre-press of material to be presented by visual communications in print, multi-media, and Web design. The ability to convert abstract concepts into visual representation while maintaining the IIA brand is essential. This position is responsible for tracking and placing advertisements in print and electronic publications as well as serving as the contact person for advertisement issues.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works with and director, production and new media, editorial director and manager of web operations to establish design strategies and goals of printed and online material.

Prepares page layout grid (imposition) for magazine.

Creates and develops graphic design of book, print (e.g., magazine and custom publications), and online material for department.

Serves as artistic consultant to the Educational Materials directors and editors.

Ensures IIA brand is present in all material.

Tracks and places advertisements in print and electronic publications. Ensures incoming print and electronic files received from designer and advertisers are complete and accurate. Serve as contact person for advertiser issues.

Prepares all pre-press files for print products, ensuring accurate material is received by printer.

Reviews proofs and presents to management for approval.

Assists the director, production and new media with special projects as needed.

Qualifications:
 
Computer Skills                                        
Intermediate or higher ability to work in a computerized environment with a working knowledge of most Microsoft Office products.  Experience with Macintosh OS X operating system, Adobe InDesign Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, and Flash is required.

Education and/or Experience                                              
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university and two or three years of experience with magazine, book, and Web design. Knowledge of magazine production and prepress required. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Assists Marketing/Advertising Director in developing, coordinating, implementing and evaluating Worldwide Challenge marketing activities. Supervises the marketing assistant in the execution of various marketing and/or advertising activities. Recommends and coordinates enhancements to existing programs and/or the development of new programs or projects (including online advertising materials). Conducts market research and then creates (including online and printed formats), compiles, and converts findings into user-friendly graphs, charts, tables and other presentation formats. Liaisons with Worldwide Challenge’s subscriptions manager for obtaining customer buying data. Works with Worldwide Challenge’s computer expert to ensure all marketing programs and efforts are continually updated and enhanced to run smoothly.

Required Qualifications: Desire a multi-talented individual with direct mail-promotion experience; understands market research and analysis; has strong written and verbal communications; and can multi-task. Production/Ad Traffic Manager
General Description: Coordinate production and printing of multiple issues which includes acquiring all ad materials.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with contracted advertisers each issue, both via e-mail and phone, to assess ad materials for the issue, answers questions about specs, extensions, charges, etc.
  • Map the issue, distribute copies/PDF’s and update as needed
  • Review map to ensure accuracy of ad sizes and shapes
  • Calculate ad/edit % and submit to circulation dept
  • Follow-up and acquire all ad materials
  • Regularly communicate with sales staff and publisher regarding status of ad materials
  • Work with classified sales reps to prepare back pages/classified sections for Ad Art and route for necessary approvals
  • Coordinate “ripping” of final pages with edit and prepress, get all final digital color proofs approved
  • Maintain mock-book with lasers of full page ads and editorial pages, encourage publisher &/or art director to review before shipping final files to printer
  • Coordinate transfer of all final page files, edit & ad, to printing plant, work with printer CSR to fix any problems
  • After issue ships: enter ad production charges, e-mail accounting with all house ads, clear code invoices, store ad proofs and return any materials to clients as requested, mark up advance copies with ad/edit % & ship to appropriate post office
